Albania: The wild river Vjosa may continue to flow!

Breakthrough after 8 years of commitment: Decision for River National Park instead of Dam construction

After continuing protests from the population, international scientists and nature conservation organisations, the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, used the opening of the Vjosa research centre in Tepelena on 25.9.20, which we co-financed, to surprisingly express his support for the planning stop of the KalivaƧ dam and the establishment of a Vjosa National park, which had been demanded from all sides!

The dimensions would be enormous: about 300-350 kilometres of rivers and streams would be protected, there is no such protected area in the whole of Europe! Further planned damming of one of the last natural rivers in Europe would also be off the table.
